A long time ago, in the beginning of the world, the old Lakota spiritual leader, being on a high mountain, had a vision. In his view, Iktomi, the great teacher of wisdom has emerged as a spider.
Iktomi and spoke in a sacred language that only the spiritual leaders of the Lakota could understand it.While speaking, Iktomi, the spider, took a ring from the old willow and using feathers, horsehair, beads and began to weave a spiderweb. And he spoke to the old man about the cycles of life, how we begin our lives as new born, how do we get from childhood and then adult life, and how, finally, we reach adulthood, and we need to take care of new babies, completing the cycle. But, Iktomi said, continuing to blend canvas, in every moment of life we are faceing with many forces, some good and some bad. If you listen to the good forces, they will guide you in the right direction. But if you listen to the bad ones, they will hurt you and lead you in the wrong direction. He continued: “There are many forces and different directions that can help or interfere with the harmony of nature and the Great Spirit and all of his wonderful teachings.” While the spider spoke, he continued to weave cloth, starting from the outside and then working toward the center. When he finished speaking Iktomi gave to old Lakota the canvas and said: “See, the canvas is a perfect circle but there is a hole in the center circle. Use the cloth to help yourself and your people to reach your goals and enjoying their ideas, dreams and visions of life If you believe in the Great Spirit, the cloth will keep your good ideas, while bad ideas will disappear through the hole. ” The old Lakota share their vision to his people and now the Indians of North America’s Dreamcatcher use as a canvas of their lives. He is hanging above their beds or their home to sift their dreams and visions. What is good in their dreams are captured by the canvas life, and evil in their dreams escapes through the hole in the center of the canvas and not part of them. They think Dreamcatcher masters the destiny of their future. According to legend, dreams are sacred messengers spirits. It is said that the hole in the center of the canvas allows good dreams to come, while bad dreams are trapped in cloth until disappear. It is considered that the Dreamcatcher is meant to bless the one who sleeps with pleasant dreams, good luck and harmony.
